Okay, it's 1st August here in the UK.

Hopefully I'm not treading on anybody's toes by starting this thread, if I am please let me know and I promise not to do it again :)

Here are the 'rules':

No explicit or suggestive images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see).
No political or religious attacks.
No racist or other attacks against a group of people.

So.....

Some things I would like to change.....

1. I'd like to make the bars at the top and bittom (panels) see-through
2. I'd like one of those text based system monitor thingys

That'll do for starters :)

Anybody got any hints on how I could do that?

Thanks :)

1. right-click on the panel and select 'properties' then 'background' (it's easy from there).

2. sudo apt-get install conky

Thanks for that, conky is now installed - is there a nice graphical interface that I can use to configure it at all? I can't see anything in any of my menus here.

Thanks.

Thanks.

here's a link - http://conky.sourceforge.net/

i've made some changes in it by creating a file .conkyrc. i've used it to mostly just move it around, like alignment top_right or alignment bottom_left, etc.

Just one question.....how come that machine is called 'Telecaster' but it has a picture of a Strat on the desktop? :pLOL. I have 7 guitars (that strat isn't one of them, though). I name all my computers after different guitars. My mainstay is called telecaster because it is incredibly versatile and you can always be sure it will work for whatever you want to use it for. I have a "flyingV" for my testbox, "ES335" for an older, mellower box, and "lespaul" as well.

Not many people would have caught that! Very observant!

Ther's a few nice ones there, cheers mate.

Regards your theme, if you're after the ultimate desktop, it's got to have a custom theme. I'd try a large selection of themes from gnome-look.org and see what controls are suited to certain window borders. If you find a few that you like but cant choose between them, that's great. Pick & mix between the themes (gimping them to suit), easily creating a custom theme.

All the best,

Tony.

PS. Don't limit yourself to purely gnome themes, xfce components also integrate easily.

My desktop doesn't look all that bad for a 32 MB comp. . .its got Crystal/Kubuntu WM, blurred/outline + simple lighting, and the KDE Gears Red wallpaper.

Gray/red color theme with window transparency turned on in a lot of areas.
I also have the cynapses Karamba extension running.

And most surprisingly, I can type. My box hasn't exploded yet. :D

As for XGL, I can't even manage that on my best comp because ATI Radeon 9200 SE's don't support the non_power_of_two extension. Oh well.

Sorry bud, didn't mean that you'd violated any of the 'rules'.

The thread I linked to is the "August Desktop Thread". Which is basically the same thread as you've got open here (ie. people posting pictures of their desktops and then discussing the method used to create them).

I thought that:

a) You might not know that it existed, and would therefore be interested in the posts in the thread, and
b) It didn't seem like a good idea to have both threads running and duplicating all the posts/discussions.

I wasn't having a go or anything, just trying to keep things tidy (I'm a bit of a neat freak! :D ).

Cheers,

*Cats*

Well I've decided on my gnome desktop for this month.

For the first half of the month it's gonna be like this whilst I try out USP for a while:
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7572/screenshot60thumbmq2.png (http://img429.imageshack.us/img429/4691/screenshot60tk9.png)
Since taking Screenshots of thunar seem to be popular lately I decided to include it in this screenshot too :p (In reality I use Nautilus more than Thunar)

And for the second half of the month I think I'll have it like this:

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/3798/screenshot59thumbnn0.png (http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7062/screenshot59po2.png)

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7572/screenshot60thumbmq2.png (http://img429.imageshack.us/img429/4691/screenshot60tk9.png)
Since taking Screenshots of thunar seem to be popular lately I decided to include it in this screenshot too :p (In reality I use Nautilus more than Thunar)

And for the second half of the month I think I'll have it like this:

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/3798/screenshot59thumbnn0.png (http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7062/screenshot59po2.png)
This is from last month when I was messing about. I intended to use this for this month from the beginning but I've decided to try out USP instead of SLAB for a while :-k.

WOW! i really like your desktop!
can you please share that wallpaper?
and give some details about the theme and fonts?
thank you!

BTW, J-POP rocks ;)

Ohh...I want that theme. Did you release it for download?

I'll release it as soon as I've checked it works ok with cgwd 0.35 :)

You'll need to update to cgwd 0.35 if you haven't already as there is an import bug in 0.34

_simon_
August 4th, 2006, 07:28 PM
Here you go:

http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?pid=20349#p20349

Make sure you are using cgwd 0.35 (availabe via update manager) else when you choose Import it will place it in the wrong location.

Awesome! Thanks!

One problem; when trying to import that package, it doesn't show in the list. I assume it's because it has no extension, so I appended .tar.gz to the end. Now it shows, but it says "theme.ini specifies invalid theme name". =[

Sounds like you're not using cgwd 0.35

If you tried import and it said it was done then check ~/.cgwd/theme/

You probably have a whole bunch of folders in there leading you up to your desktop. You should find a folder called Vista. (keep opening the folders until you find it)

Move that folder into ~/.cgwd/themes/ (notice themeS, not theme)

It's a bug with cgwd that was fixed in version 0.35

I have tested the theme with 0.35 to make sure it works correctly.

I don't even have a .cgwd folder in my home folder. It has to be installed because I can use the cgwd theme installer, it's just giving me errors when I try to import your theme.

EDIT: Synaptic says I have 0.33, and the latest is 0.33. I suppose I'm missing a repository?

Thanks for the help!

right-click on your bottom panel, select 'properties' and unmark 'Expand'. Then add whatever launchers you want to your panel :)

There are also lots of desklets and separate apps available, but IMHO Gnome's own panel beats them all.

I wish I could say the same. gDesklets are just way too ugly and unpolished for me to even begin using them in any of the limited constructive ways they could be used for. On Windows I loved desklets/widgets but none of the Linux alternatives seem to measure up to the Windows alternatives (Konfabulator and most of all Avedesk are particularly stunning).

Mine would be a bit more customized but compiz is giving me grief. Every reboot I have to select the "compiz window decerator" from the start-compiz.py icon or I dont have any menu bars :(

I did realize that thier is now a option to set each windows opacity Right click a programs title bar and look at the "apperance" menu.

I just can't remain content with either DE or background ATM, here's another:

http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/data/5/medium/XFCE_CLOCK.jpg (http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3235&size=big&cat=5)

Wouldn't it be nice to have a random DE along with a random wallpaper upon reboot?

Here's my desktop from july, but since i haven't posted it under july and i haven't changed it since, i'll post it anyway:

Maybe a random DE would be overkill but an application to display a random wallpaper at login (for any DE) would be great.

The wallpaper was from DeviantART, here's the link:

You're looking for this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=170864 :)

Also, the xfce desktop manager has a built in way to have a list of backgrounds, one of which will be randomly chosen at start up. Not that that helps in GNOME, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

there is another Session in KDM using XGL.. performance is.. well, I could really cry when running it, the rendering of wobbling effects ist _so_ poor and it really lags while pressing alt+tab, no synchron task description and miniature.. and other things yet to come.

You see I am quite frustrated :(

But may I be helped :) ?

Xgl and compiz running. Although I don't think it's very stable yet I'm much more organized and happy whenever I press F12.

The thing with compiz isn't just the eyecandy I've found out as soon as I got it running. It's that it increses productivity. Can't wait form my new laptop and for xgl+compiz gets more polish.

Tango Icon, clearlooks controls and some border theme from the cgwd-theme chooser.

I'm a big fan of clean desktops, but not so clean that you can't do anything. I think my current desktop strikes a decent balance between the two (at least for me.)

The system monitor on the right is conky, per a guide somewhere in the howto section. The background I found on gnome-look (I think) which I then changed around a bit.

Edited because I used the wrong option on fileshack.

Very true. I actually saw some benchmarks a while back showing that Kwin is faster than just about any other WM, including the ultralight ones. It's just a matter of having the resources to not be slowed down by everything else running in KDE.

I recommend the Square Cut firefox theme, the little coloured squares light up and look really cool, you have to see it for your self to know what Im talking about. Also Bernard Fanning is cool if you havent heard his (or powderfinger's) music.

Kinda plain, but I am very new to all this Linux stuff.

Ubuntu:

Kubuntu:

Originally, I was very against Kubuntu, but after giving it another shot I am torn between the two.

Got rid of my windows partition since I stopped playing WoW. Decided to try compiz again, and holy hell it's gotten cooler since before.
