Hello all,

I was installing xubuntu on a HP Envy 4 Ultrabook that has Windows 7 installed in UEFI.

After installing xubuntu, my laptop still boots straight into the windows boot manager and straight into windows 7 on power up. The only way I could boot into xubuntu was if I Esc (to interrupt boot) > F9 (to select boot device), which would give me a list (OS boot manager, Ubuntu, ubuntu) in that order. The first option boots w7, while the remaining 2 boots into grub, to which I will select Ubuntu again to boot into xubuntu. Note that in my bios, under boot order there is no "Ubuntu" option so I couldn't just change the default in my bios.

because I wanted grub as my main boot manager, I went into xubuntu and ran the standard boot-repair, which still did not fix my problem.

i went into xubuntu again and ticked the "backup and rename windows efi files [to solve hard coded efi problems]" option in boot-repair as a test to see if it would change anything. The log file generated by boot-repair is here http://paste.ubuntu.com/10693466

after boot-repair was done, I restarted my computer and all I see is

Booting in insecure mode
Failed to open \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\grubx64.efi - 800000000000000E
Failed to load image
Failed to open \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\MokManager.efi - 800000000000000E
Failed to load image

so afterwards I sort of realised that it didn't work. I restarted and tried using my select boot device option (the Esc>f9) method and I see the same error, not the usual menu. Tried entering bios, nope still same error. I can't even enter my bios.

the last I remember my boot order in bios is set to os boot manager first, so I don't think my laptop will react to anything even if I put in a Linux install disk into a external disk drive and plug it in (my computer is an Ultrabook so no internal disk drives). I tried plugging in the thumbdrive which I put the xubuntu install ISO on but still nothing happened.

i did some research and it says it's probably a secure boot issue, which I don't think is on (really don't remember). And right now I can't access anything at all not even my bios. I faced similar issues with windows 8 in the past where it would "hibernate" instead of fully shutdown and I would be unable to access the bios and etc, in the past. (Just as extra information)

1. Did I just kill my computer? Can I still save it? How do I save it?
2. If my computer is dead, can I still rescue files from my windows partition with any method? The file system is largely untouched I would assume only the booting efi files were changed.

Hello chrisgzf and welcome to Ubuntu,
UEFI can be a pain. But you may want to give boot repair a try. It worked for me.
it's found here. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair)
follow the instructions it gives carefully.

Did you install Ubuntu in UEFI mode also? If not, I'd start again as Ubuntu needs to be installed in the same mode as Win (UEFI or Legacy).

Hello kc1di,

As mentioned above, I actually used boot-repair twice, which has led to this huge problem. Nevertheless, thank you for your reply.

Yes, I did install xubuntu in UEFI, same as how Windows was installed.
