Recently I read in a tax instruction booklet that one can mail in tax forms as a 2d barcode, instead of the normal printed fill-out form, to have it processed much faster. When I read up on this, it seemed they only support this for specific tax programs and tax advisors.

Is there really a proprietary barcode technology for tax submissions? and if not, where can we find the specifications for this code, and has anyone started an OSS 2d-code generator?

Some of the States in the US allow you to use 2-D barcodes for State tax returns. Each State is different. The State specifies what software they support.
