Hello,
I have huge problems with my ubuntu. They often prevent me from working on my master-thesis which is really bad. Two big problems:
Problem 1: I use Matlab 2014a from the MathWorks (Math-Software). The license-check for this software is linked to the mac-address of my wired network card (eth0). But randomly on startup, this network device has disappeared!! If I type ifconfig -a in the terminal, it shows only wifi and loopback. The software that I need to work is then not going to start. I have no way of resolving this but to restart as often as it takes for eth0 to appear again. This is very frustrating!
Problem 2: Randomly on startup, the font of the desktop environment is messed up, it looks similar to courier, thinner than the usual ubuntu font. I think it might be a standad font for a lot of other distributions, something like on this random screenshot:

Together with the font, the keyboard layout is messed up, instead of my german "qwertz"-layout, it is "qwerty" (probably english), even though in the configuration menu it still says that it is german. Here too, I restart and usually after reboot (or even after only logging out and in again), I get the usual ubuntu font.
But Problem 1 is afaik not resolvable by just logging out and in. I have to reboot very often every morning and hope that things work eventually. Do I need to reinstall?
My setup: ubuntu 14.10 (64 bit) on a lenovo L440 laptop, ssd harddrive, dual boot windows 7 and linux (using grub to choose on startup), I also installed kubuntu once to try it. Windows and kubutu are there, but I only use ubuntu.
I am grateful for any ideas.
Jakob
