I was troubleshooting a VAIO when I found this. ...

Do we (meaning Ubuntu users, not just as forum junkies) keep model-by-model howtos anywhere as an Ubuntu-specific reference?

I've seen linuxlaptops.org (http:/www.linuxlaptops.org) and I've seen in the wiki where a few models are described (here's an example (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HPZD7000)), but I was impressed by how much effort was put into that VAIO page.

I'd be willing to put together something for installing Dapper on some of the machines I use. Perhaps I should just put it in the wiki?

Ubuntu is trying to be a friendly as possible, so the install either tries to detect what your computer is like, or it uses the standard drivers (Vesa, for example). I guess If someone really wanted to get down and dirty and optimize every part of their computer, that guide would be good, but Linux is starting to have a good coverage of hardware. For example, my Sony Vaio laptop worked on first install, without configuring things. I would only follow one of those guides if I wanted my hotkeys to work, or any other very specific hardware.

Help them if you wish (in fact, if your laptop is a pain to get working, I would reccommend it), but if it worked right away, why bother?

Be aware that that guide is a little old (it is talking about the 2.4 kernels, while we are on 2.6. Unless they are on a very stable distro branch, it is outdated.

yes, we do (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam?highlight=%28LaptopTestingTeam%2 9), at least to some extent.

Absolutely. Canonical has an official laptop testing team, and there's also a section of the site for users with laptops to post status reports and any tweaks they needed to get the laptop working fully. A good bet is:
