Ubuntu 14.10 update wont work with TB

I have been a Ubuntu user for 7 years, and have thrived on this distro despite the fact that I can't write code. Updated to 14.10, and now need some very basic support to get the SMTP in Thunderbird to work. Receiving mail is OK. I despise the idea of cloud computing, as much as the thought of going to MS. There must be a simple way to restore functionality to TB. I have been struggling with this for 3 weeks. Anybody? Thanks.

I take it you have used Thunderbird before updating to 14.10.
The SMTP settings are under edit, account settings. Go to the bottom of account settings where it lists outgoing server (SMTP).
You can do your tweaking there. If you have any difficulty, please post.
