can't update nor upgrade

i use to be able to do all of this stuff below and now i can not do any of these things
open a terminal from Application-Accessories-Terminal
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
i can go into Application and the other 2 things,,,anyone please send me an email to <snip>
