The firefox icon is not displayed on the application launch bar, instead there is a small grey icon of what appears to be a photo camera. If added to the desktop, the firefox icon is displayed normally, as well as in the menu. Since I am totally new to ubuntu, I would very much appreciate detailed advice.

That geyish looking icon is probably a generic web browser. If you want the Firefox icon
1. Right click any open space on the LXPanel.
2. Choose Add/Remove Panel Items.
3. Select Application Launch Bar (should be the second item in the list).
4. Select Edit.
5. On the right side of the window choose Internet.
6. Select Firefox Web Browser.
7. Select Add and then the icon will appear on the left side. You can move it where you want it by using the up and down buttons.
8. Close the window and the Firefox icon will be on your LXPanel.

Thank you for the answer, but it is not the problem, firefox is added to the application launch bar. I made a screenshot to show how it looks like. The grey icon is below the shut down icon. As you can see the firefox icon is showing when the browser is on (down below in the panel).

OK. What is the icon before the last Application Launch Bar under Panel Preferences?. Mine is the Digital Clock but obviously you have changed yours and I cannot zoom in far enough to see what it is. Your problem as stated in your first post was the lack of a Firefox icon. If you want to delete the greyish icon as well, you would do that under Panel Preferences as well. I would be curious to know what that icon represents. What program does it open when you launch from there?

The grey icon is the one which launches firefox. As you can see in the attached photo, I have a digital clock above, then the shutdown icon, then comes the grey little icon which launches firefox. Sorry for the confusion, in my first post I meant to say that an icon for firefox is displayed, but it's not the firefox icon (fox surrounding a globe).

You can move the quick launch icons up and down and eliminate them in your Panel Preferences.

I am aware of that, I used the Panel Preferences to put firefox on the Application launch bar. For some reason, on the Application launch bar it appears as a grey little square. So my problem is not eliminating the grey icon, but changing it, making it look different - like a firefox icon should look like. Thank you for your answers and sorry I couldn't make myself clear before.

Hello!
I am having the same problem in Lubuntu 14.04.2's lxpanel. Is there a solution for this?
