I attempted to update from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 and had a hiccup. I started the process as I went to bed figuring I could let it run while I slept and finish in the morning like I have with previous upgrades. What I woke up to was an error that states the following.
Filesystem check or mount failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and continue booting after re-trying
filesystems. Any further errors will be ignored
root@caressa-netbook:~#

If I push CONTROL-D I get the same message again. the note book I'm trying to install on is a Aspire one with an intel atom processor N450.
I would like to recover my pictures and other files if possible. not sure if i can do that with booting off a usb if that is even possible at this point.
also can not run in safe mode it tells me no such file or directory.
