View Full Version : [SOLVED] Ubuntu 14.04/ any linux disto not installing

I have tried so hard to install Linux on my computer so many times! I have tried with DVD's (properly burned via tutorial on official Ubuntu website, tried the following Linux distributions: Ubuntu 14.04.01 32 and 64 bit, Ubuntu 14.10 64 bit, Fedora workstation 21 64 bit, and puppy linux) and also have tried USB installation (With Ubuntu 14.04.02 64 bit with both formatting and placing the .iso, and with LiLi)! I have tried the F6 option in the ubuntu loading screen (as far as it gets, by the way) and have come up with no good results. I tried all options in the menu, including trying Ubuntu, and installing Ubuntu, and have come up with no results! I really am desperate (as windows is a... Unfruitful (to say the least) OS for me)) to get help, and would love ANY help I can get. Included is a list of a .nfo i converted for you.

And it has problems with any other OS besides Linux?

Here's where it says it has hardware conflicts:

Please post the model number of your motherboard and copy down the BIOS info from your BIOS post messages.

This is what I suspect. You might get these messages if you had a BIOS problem or a nvidia nForce controller firmware problem.

First to try would be to go to your BIOS setup and go to the setting that says to "Reset settings to factory defaults."
If that does not help., look at the BIOS version, then to the vendor's site to see if the BIOS is up-to-date (latest version).
If up to date, go to nVidia's site, and see if your nForce firmware version is the latest for that motherboard's nForce controller (found in the motherbaord's spec sheet.)

Those 3 things would cause the kinds of conflicts you are having.

Here we go!
My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 Rev 2.0 NEWEST BIOS UPDATE (I just updated them, but Ubuntu still doesn't work). It is a, as said by the model number, S-Series motherboard by Gigabyte. Here are some pictures of the bios/bootup sequence:
The main boot up sequence, when I just started it.
260139
The sequence that you see AFTER the boot sequence, where it verifies DMI pool data and loads, showing IRQ residence and more.
260138
Tell me if you need more.
By the way sorry for image quality, I only have a crappy phone camera (But not a crappy phone :D)
And no, I have tried windows vista ultimate 64 bit 2 times (one got corrupted by me being stupid), so I can't say anything about other operating systems.

Let's try to narrow some options. (troubleshooting tips for the weekend project :D)
I don't think you have an exotic system that will not run Linux.
So first make sure that the USB is bootable, a good confirmation is try it on another computer. If it boots linux from the flash drive, then your USB flash drive is good.

Next, be sure that the computer, BIOS is set to enable USB and boot sequence should use USB device first. Some motherboards treat USB drive as hard drives, so you may need to make the first boot device as USB-HDD. Other motherboards like mine have the option like pressing F12 that will make me choose which device on the computer I want to boot.

Next, if you were able to boot to USB but Linux doesn't load or is stuck, try to minimize peripherals/devices connected on the computer, say remove the CD drive and internal hard drive, just mouse and keyboard, and monitor connected to the computer.
Just boot from USB and try LIVE mode. If you were able to get to the linux desktop, then reboot and start connecting the internal devices and other peripherals one at a time.

My USB does work, but the problem was that it (when I press F12 and pick USB-HDD) asks me to pick a system kernel or something like that... As soon as I can, I will post the picture.

Okay! I have successfully installed via LiLi on my USB, but now when I boot up Ubuntu (Grub works just fine) it gets stuck and hangs on this screen after loggin...
260160
I put all of the information in correct... Why? D:
Also, thanks for all of the help, I would have never gotten this far (since I am still learning)!

Does anyone need a specific file to help me?

Did you try booting with the "nomodeset" option (since you have Nvidia video)? If that works, look for the Nvidia drivers under the Dash's "Additional Drivers" and try the current. Can you switch to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2 or any F2 - F6) and get a login prompt? Switch back to the X screen with Alt-F7 (note no control needed from the text terminals to switch).

jacobpratt909
February 23rd, 2015, 02:32 AM
Well, you will need to tell me how to do that... Also I got it installed, but it hangs at the page after the loggin... D:

jacobpratt909
February 23rd, 2015, 02:58 AM
Here is how it acts. This is when I loggin:
260167
Then after I loggin, the screen flashes randomly for about 10 seconds, and then hangs (I tested this for 5 minutes) :
260166
Grrrrr computer I hate you D:

Did you try switching to a virtual terminal? At the grub menu, you can type e to edit (instructions at bottom of screen), and on the line starting with "linux" add "nomodeset" (no quotes) just before the "quiet splash".

MAFoElffen
February 23rd, 2015, 05:07 PM
At the grub screen, press the <down arrow> once to see the instructions and so it doesn't go away (timer). Press the <up Arrow> key to return the the first menu option. Press what ever key the instruction say, to get into an edit mode. May be <E> or <Tab> depending...

When you get into the edit mode, go down to the line that starts with "linux". That is the kernel boot line. Go the the end of that line and append "nomodeset". Press <cntl><X> to boot...

jacobpratt909
February 24th, 2015, 03:10 AM
I tried nomodeset, Ubuntu had the "Error sound" that it has when you try to close firefox with two or more tabs, and then when I reset, MY COMPUTER STAYS AT BIOS SCREEN D:
Now I can't use my computer, let alone Ubuntu

When I booted up the install of Ubuntu 14.04.02 64x (the version I always install), it went through with log in, then showed the Ubuntu symbol as if I had two monitors (I don't even have two monitor slots on my graphics card...). The install never booted correctly, except in graphics fail-safe mode.

Try 2: NOMODESET: Had the black screen and idle processor function (as seen by my CPU usage light). Never installed.

Try 3: NOLAPIC: Had the, like NOMODESET, black screen and idle processor... No install.

What I thought: "Maybe combining "NOAPIC", which worked, with "NOMODESET" would work together...

Try 4: NOMODSET & NOAPIC: Black screen and idle processor. No install.

-HARD RESET-
(It had been a while).

Try 5: EDD=ON: Black screen and idle processor, no install.

Try 6: ACPI=OFF: Black screen and idle processor, no install.

-HARD RESET-

Try 7: NODMRAID: Black screen and idle processor, no install... Again...

-Next day-
-HARD RESET-

What I thought: "Every time I boot into an OS, my LAN light turns from yellow and orange (connected to internet) to yellow and yellow (local only)... Why?"

Well, I hope that helps.
Also, my internet isn't working well on my desktop, so D:

Also, I finally understood what you said with the nomodeset, I did that by editing in the Grub menu, and it booted :D
However, no internet means that I can't get the drivers to install, so now we wait until my LAN works :/

Update: Awwwww... My internet isn't working due to drivers, and the drivers won't install without a source of Ubuntu's kernel... WTF? Anyways, I hope that I can get it to work... nVidia sucks.

Well, after so long, my computer is now broken, so it probably wasn't Linux's problem. Someone mark this as closed please.

Sorry to hear your computer is broken . . . I was thinking the nomodeset option would at least allow you to install the proprietary video drivers. But no internet (wifi drivers needed, but ethernet does not require drivers)???

Anyway, IF, repeat IF, you're in the market now for a new PC . . . then you have more options for getting a PC with Ubuntu pre-installed. But IF , repeat, IF you still need Windows (and are not a gamer), you can install Windows inside Ubuntu using Virtual Box . . . . need at least 8 GiB for optimal performance.

Here's the company I like for Ubuntu pre-installed hardware (loven my Galago Ultra-Pro). https://system76.com/

And Dell just recently broadened their laptop offerings for Ubuntu: http://pilot.search.dell.com/linux
