Probably not. What compiz plugins are you running? Are you running the unity desktop? And what are your computer specs?

You can install the flashback session as seen at the link and choose Gnome Flashback (Metacity) at login. This session doesn't use compiz and requires less resources. http://www.webupd8.org/2014/04/how-to-install-and-tweak-gnome.html

RAM is there to be used. The important issue is, does it have a negative impact on your user experience? How much RAM is Compiz using? What utility are you using to measure it? Compiz is the window compositor. So, it has a big job to do and it will need space to do its stuff.
On my machine with 1GB RAM Compiz uses 8.5% of memory and it stays at 8.5% even when I move application windows around. The percentage used of CPU increases as stuff is moved around but the percentage memory used stays the same. I guess that the amount of memory used by Compiz will depend on the fancy effects that we have enabled. But I am only guessing about that. I do not use any fancy effects, myself.
Regards.
