Hello all,

I'm a linux newcomer and am having some strange video problems; thinking it may be a driver issue but not sure how to proceed. Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, though I haven't found anything similar after quite a bit of searching!

So: Just installed Xubuntu 14.04.1. FYI, the same problem crops up when I try Mint 17.1 MATE and 17.1 Xfce off the DVD. My old parallel Windows XP install is not having any issues, however. Screenshot; you'll see what I mean!

Any ideas on where to start? I can log in from, but its very difficult/impossible to read any menus, etc... However, if I start in compatibility mode and THEN boot, I don't have any of these color issues. I get several program error notifications when I log in and no wifi is detected, but I should be able to tweak settings at least.

Computer is one I built myself many years ago. Updated BIOS before attempting Linux install, so I don't think that's the issue. From Speccy in XP:
