When I try to run 'cheese' from the command line, I get the following:

(cheese:6083): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'cheese' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 177 error_code 11 request_code 149 (unknown) minor_code 2)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Trace/breakpoint trap

Googling the error seems to show that this might be a problem with my graphics card, but I've been struggling to figure out how to change the settings successfully. The way X/lightdm/etc have all changed so much recently has made it difficult to figure out what forum posts are still relevant.

My graphics card is: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
I'm running 14.10

How much memory? Have you tried running system monitor before you run Cheese?

How much memory does the machine have? 6GB. I don't think it's related to memory, as this happens every time with cheese, while other more memory-intensive programs run reliably every time.

I'm able to reproduce this exactly on Ubuntu 14.10 as well.
