Why don't you install 14.04.1 or 14.10 in stead of upgrading?

How do I set this up since the ISO will not fit on a disc ?

You just install from a USB stick or a DVD.

The 14.04 ISO will fit on a DVD RW fine. Or if your machine can boot from USB you could put it on a USB stick. If you can't do either, perhaps you could use the minimal CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) and then install what you need from the net.

What hardware are you trying to install on to?

What exactly was the problem that led to an all day job to get 12.10 to install?

To upgrade from 12.10 to 14.04 we would first need to upgrade to 13.04 and then to 13.10 and then to 14.04. Now, here is the problem. Actually it is 3 problems. Ubuntu 12.10 has reached end of life and its repositories are now closed. This is why you cannot install applications, update or upgrade.

There is a way around this problem but once you get to Ubuntu 13.04 you will find the 13.04 has also reached end of life and its repositories are now closed and the same applies to Ubuntu 13.10. Now, as I said, it is possible to work around all this but the risk of breaking the OS becomes greater with each upgrade we do when upgrading in a sequence like this. It is also a lot of data to download and takes a lot of time. And that is why we are recommending a new install of Ubuntu 14.04.

But it is your choice.

I do not have a DVD burner so that is not an option
I have attemtp 8 times to make a USB installer and it has failed. Seems nothing is working today. About to rip my hair out!

I cannot seem to full delte the files on the sticks nor can I re-format the stick either. I have followed the intructions to the letter and nothing!
any suggestions?

Ok I reached out and a friend is going to burn a new 14.10 LTS disc....

I still have some hair left but 12.10 is just PITA!

If he's going to the trouble of burning, you might try 14.04 LTS instead. It will be good until 2019 but 14.10 will be good only until shortly after 15.04 comes out then you'll have to upgrade again, basically every 6 months or so, if you go that route. The LTS path is good for years at a time.
