I am running unincumbered stand-alone Ubuntu 14.04/32, Unity, firefox/chrome, wireless nettops . . . on two identical (and separate-untied) computers, 30 miles apart.

I downlloaded Amaya.deb and FormaJunkie.deb, both programs ran through the Software Centre, and loaded into Applications, then moused their icons over to Unity, when I am cleared, and in desktop they both mouse-over and do the 'fade' as if opening . . . they never load, but, I get the left side/right side white pointers appearing on the icon as if they did. they are showing up in Software Center as loaded, I have reloaded and rebooted numerous (15) times.

One computer acts as described above, the other computer runs the programs just fine.

but, those sure are cute little icons !

One way to get an idea of what's wrong is to attempt to open the applications from the terminal by typing the application name. Any errors should be displayed.
