View Full Version : [SOLVED] Compaq Presario R3000: Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.1 LTS

I have an old laptop that I prefer to load with ubuntu from dvd. I know I have a broadcom issue, but I cannot even get thru the install process. I think it might be that everything is 64 bit these days and this computer was only 32 bit. I tried dl'ing the 32 bit version of 14.04 from the official bitorrent... but the computer won't boot from the dvd in that case. Maybe someone could point me to a link for the correct version of 14.04 to help me get started? Any other suggestions?

where suppose to guess what kind of old laptop you have ?
broadcom issue ?
is it 32 or 64 ?

your not making much sense.

32bit vs 64bit will have no effect on your problem as you are trying to install a 32bit system which will work on both 32bit and 64bit hardware.

However, what exactly is your hardware specs of this "old laptop"? It is quite possibly too low spec to run Ubuntu, but may be able to run Xubuntu or Lubuntu without too much difficulty.

Tell us more about how you prepared the bootable DVD that you used for the installation and we will try to help you more.

My old laptop:
Compaq Presario-R3000
Pentium(R)4 - 2.40 GHz

Here's the broadcom info:

NOTE: I'll run the fix as soon as I can get a terminal to open.

RE: the boot disk:
I know the bootable dvd works as I burned the image to disc and actually used this disc to set-up on a different laptop. It's working great, but it's not nearly as old as this one.

Yes, Lubuntu is a good choice. When you have a complete and updated Lubuntu running using wired internet connection this one should help:

Thanks mörgæs (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=939075)! I was running Lubuntu in tandem with XP on this machine. I was hoping to try Ubuntu (so both old OS systems are gone). I suppose I would not sacrifice too much by running Lubuntu. Might as well give it a try.
