January 9th, 2015, 01:07 AM
*Newbie Alert* I have a lenovo B570 notebook, and have run linux distrobutions like elementary os and ubuntu before, but after changing through a few different windows operating systems, i seem not to be able to re-install any linux distro's, i have tried for 2 days solid to install either ubuntu and mint onto the laptop, and it complete's succesfully everytime, the problem is when i then reboot the laptop, it just doesnt boot again, like there is no operating system installed, i have tried to re arange the partitions, use boot repair, grub installer, but all have not worked, i have even swapped out the hard drives and the same thing is happening. If someone could please respond i would be very grateful!

lol, sounds like you got a windows virus.
sorry, just couldn't help myself. :)

if only it was that simple

how are you installing? cd or usb or other
have you changed the bios boot order?
luke-e-
January 9th, 2015, 01:23 AM
ive tried both, its much quicker of the usb(obviously), so thats how ive managed to run the live cd to try and fix the problem,
Yep, tried that, my bios seems to be really unhelpful!
kerry_s
January 9th, 2015, 01:25 AM
how long did you wait at the black screen, sure it wasn't just booting up slow?
luke-e-
January 9th, 2015, 01:28 AM
after the bios tries to boot from the hard drive, it sorta just gives up then tries my other media (network port etc..) and just loops, its like the files to boot up are missing, one thing i did notice, in gparted, there is a 512mb fat32 partition and that is marked with boot on it,
kerry_s
January 9th, 2015, 01:31 AM
fat32, theres your windows virus. linux wouldn't make or use that in the install.
try formating & creating a new partion table on the whole drive.
luke-e-
January 9th, 2015, 01:33 AM
ive done that endless amount of times! this is my issue, ha! just dont know what else i can do, everytime i wipe the partition, create a new table then set buntu to install, it does exactly the same thing, and thats with mint also
kerry_s
January 9th, 2015, 01:37 AM
if theres a fat32 partition you did not create, then you are not formating the whole drive.
luke-e-
January 9th, 2015, 01:38 AM
is there a terminal command that will format the whole drive completley?
kerry_s
January 9th, 2015, 01:50 AM
of course there is, but if you can see the partition in gparted you should be able to delete it.
using dd wrong can really mess up your day, i consider that a last resort.

MBR or GPT partitioning? I was thinking that fat32 partition could be your efi partition.
luke-e-
January 9th, 2015, 02:07 AM
Now MBR was my initial partition.. But I have also tried gtp, this is what confuses me,

you sound like you dealt with this before, so i'm going to step back & let you 2 work on it.
good luck to both of you!

No, I haven't really dealt with this before. It was just an idea, because I got the impression the discussion was drifting towards tunnel vision. It often happens when just two people are discussing something (especially when they produce 10 posts in 30 minutes), so I thought a fresh idea might help.
I do know that if you use UEFI mode (most common on modern hardware) you have to use GPT partitioning and use a FAT32 EFI partition.
luke-e-
January 9th, 2015, 12:20 PM
Should there be a uefi option into the bios? Because I can't find anything to do with uefi, so if I go for the GPT partition, the fat32 at the start of the partition is correct?

Please get Ubuntu Boot Repair, but do not let it repair, at least not now. Use it to write its Boot Info summary report and upload it. Post the address in a reply, and we have a chance to learn more about your computer.
Run Boot Repair from a separate drive. See this link
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

Now we know it is an UEFI installation with only linux (no Windows is reported by the boot-info script). And the drive is a gpt (GUID partition table) which fits UEFI. Is it correct that you have already tried Boot-Repair (as you wrote in the opening post)? Was it the same version or an older one? If you have the current (newest) version, you might try again to let Boot Repair do its job.
But I must admit, that I'm no expert on UEFI. I know a little about it, but not much enough. Also it differs a lot between computers, because many computer manufacturers and vendors use non-standard UEFI versions (we can guess in order to make it difficult to run other operating systems than Windows). I think oldfred is the best expert here at the Ubuntu Forums. See his tutorial
UEFI Installing - Tips (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2147295)
See also this link and (other) links from it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick#UEFI
-o-
You have no Windows. Is it by intention or did you overwrite Windows by mistake?
- If you want Windows 8, and want to reinstall it, you need UEFI.
- If you are happy with 'only' Ubuntu, you can change the partition table to the old standard MSDOS (with gparted when booted from an Ubuntu desktop install drive). And then install Ubuntu again. It will be more straight-forward.
Edit:
Please tell us more about your computer. It helps giving more specific advice.
We know the brand name and model, but please also describe
- the graphics chip/card
- the wifi chip/card

VGA compatible controller

I think the graphics should work, and the wifi too.

Please read the link in post #20 and reply also to these questions:
You have no Windows. Is it by intention or did you overwrite Windows by mistake?
- If you want Windows 8, and want to reinstall it, you need UEFI.
- If you are happy with 'only' Ubuntu, you can change the partition table to the old standard MSDOS (with gparted when booted from an Ubuntu desktop install drive). And then install Ubuntu again. It will be more straight-forward.

The no windows was intentional, but I will probably duel boot at some point with windows 7, but as I stated previously, I have tried with the msdos format also

Basically, if the Ubuntu works live from a USB pendrive, it should also work when installed. And obviously it works live, otherwise you would not be able to run Boot Repair.
In most computers it will be easier to install Ubuntu in BIOS mode with an MSDOS partition table. But I don't know, some new computers might refuse to run properly in BIOS alias CSM mode (opposite to UEFI).
So I would encourage you to try again.
- Set the BIOS/UEFI system in BIOS (maybe called CSM, maybe something else, legacy?)
- Make an MSDOS partition table in the hard disk drive, and try again to install Ubuntu. I would recommend the version 14.04.1 LTS - 64 bits - I guess that is what you have already.
By the way, did you check with md5sum that the download was correct? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

okay, so i did everything you just said in the previous post, but could not find the UEFI thing in bios, the closest thing i got to legacy was usb legacy, and that was enabled. I am now running into exactly the same problems, i just dont know what else i can do.
I did put another hard drive into my laptop that was not set up for efi that had ubuntu installed on it, and it booted fine, im just confused as to what my problem is?

This is very hopeful :-)
So if you can get the new drive set up in a similar way as this other hard disk drive, everything should work for you. Please put the output of the following command within
tags for both drives in a reply.
sudo parted -l ... space minus ell
Then we can check for differences.
