Upgrade from 12.02 to 14.04 seems to be stuck

I have initiated the system provide upgrade feature. The files downloaded successfully. The unpacking commenced, but seems to be stuck for a long time on "unpacking gcalctool". Is there a way to check progress of the upgrade?
what happens if the upgrade is interrupted?

If you interrupt the installation of the packages, then you could end up with a broken system. Are you sure that the upgrade process is not waiting for some input from you? Move the upgrade window to one side and see if these is a dialog box underneath it waiting for you to click OK.
