Hello,

I have searched the forums and googled, but still find myself looking for a good layman's explanation of Linux (specifically gnome theming). I understand backround and icons but metacity? GTK?

Can anyone out there please give an example of what each changes on the desktop and perhaps if you know of a really good how to please forward the url.

thanks very much in advance

Well, I am not very good at it, but here's what I know;

GDM is the logon screen theme. These are all kept in /usr/share/gdm/theme(s?)
GTK is a normal theme (windows border etc.) and they are all kept in /usr/share/themes

The metacity configuration is to be found in the Gnome menu -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor (-> App -> Metacity).

@bvc a lot of links :-)
why not ad to the sticky list named: "Ubuntu Related Art Sites"
Ok it does not depend on ubuntu but i think it would be the right place.

After a very quick read these appear to be for folks who want to create new themes, icon sets etc. which I am not really interested in doing. I am really only looking for directions on how to create desktops that are pleasing to the eye from what is already available on the net at say gnome-look.org and such.

Perhaps this is above my feeble brain!
