hi, I am trying to install just anything (Ubuntu 14.04) and it asks me for authentication. I enter my regular password that I use to log into the system but that does not work. Any ideas?

Are you the person that installed Ubuntu? At that time a password was created. That is the password that the system is asking you for. Be sure that your caps lock is off.

Is that Synaptic Package Manager that you are loading? If so then we always have to authenticate Synaptic Package manager before it will load. But we can often run Software Updater without needing to authenticate. Also, we do not always need to authenticate the installation of applications when installing through the Ubuntu Software Centre.
