lubuntu odd desktop glitch

when using lubuntu 14.10 there seems to be an odd glitch with the notifications. the notifications appear to have an odd row of the background of the notification window things in the top right corner. i would give a screenshot but virtualbox messes up the desktop emulation.

Certain workarounds have been posted but I prefer to use another theme for everything including the notifications. I use the theme mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-artwork/+bug/1362555/comments/6
