View Full Version : Where can I find advanced help that does not involve mailing lists/e-mail?

I am running into a kernel/ALSA/firmware issue that I don't think I will be able to find help with here. The resources of the Ubuntu forums are great but they have their limitations. Is there a forum or chat somewhere that is known to be populated by knowledgeable people in the area of the kernel and hardware drivers?

I considered filing a bug but that looks like a months long process.

What sort of options do I have in terms of professional support? I assume that Ubuntu's professional support only covers supported hardware configurations. Could I find a developer to work for $40-50 an hour for only a few hours or is that lowballing? Honestly, I would prefer someone to lead me to the conclusion than doing it for me but I am nearly out of options myself. Also, I would really prefer to at least narrow the problem down more myself to avoid being misled.

I would make a forum post on the problem specifically, but I will never get a response and I don't know how to even format the post because I don't know if I am running into the wrong firmware, wrong ALSA version, wrong kernel version, or something else. I would make a forum post on deciding what the problem is but I know I won't get a response to that either. So you can see why I am trying to find help somewhere else.

You might try http://mailman.alsa-project.org/mailman/listinfo/alsa-devel, also take a look at the archives available by a link at that site.

I'm saddened that you think we're merely good enough to ask where the better, smarter help forums are.
There are some INCREDIBLE volunteer gurus in this forum, including Alsa and Kernel experts.

I'm just as saddened as you are. It would afterall not be right to not ask the question here. If you would like to help with the issue specifically, here it is: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2255425&p=13180673#post13180673

All right then.
I provided specific advice for your issue in that thread.

If it's free software (open source) it would generally be a forum/mailing list/IRC, where people will volunteer to help each other. People do it for fun and for free.

Nobody pays and so it is hard to find support. Unless of course you are paying for support, like the payed support offered by Ubuntu or Red Hat.

You started that thread 6 days ago. You need to bump it occasionally if it goes unanswered, otherwise it simply disappears down the list. We've relaxed the old 24-hour bump rule, but please don't bump it too often.
