new I7 machine running Win7, and wanted to install Linux in VirtualBox
I downloaded Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon and Ubuntu
Both fail during installation "Kernel panic, not syncing, no working init found"
Downloaded both installations again from alternate mirrors
Removed and reinstalled VirtualBox, Failures repeated.
Is this hardware incompatibility or can anyone recognise what I can do different except give installation ISO to the installation to boot from?
OPenSuse does install, so too WinXP

Have you checked the iso files you downloaded with the md5sum lists (for Ubuntu at UbuntuHashes - MD5sum (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes), not sure where they are for Mint).

Are you installing simply by pointing VB at the .iso files, which is what I assume from your next to last comment, or are you asking if that is how to do a VB installation?
It is certainly the way that I have always installed OSs except for WinXP, for which I don't have an .iso file, therefore I used the DVD (or is it a CD?) that I had.
