If any of you are looking for a remote control for Spotify for Linux, I have just released SpotCommander 12. A premium subscription is not required, and it doesn't have all the bugs and quirks Spotify Connect seems to have according to reports on the Spotify community and from personal experience (and it's not yet released for Linux).

It can be installed with just a few clicks on Ubuntu.

Works on Android, iOS and in all the major desktop web browsers.

It offers many additional features like making Spotify pause or stop the music after a track in the queue, or even suspend or shut down the computer. On Android it can pause on flip, pause on calls, and you can easily change between controlling multiple computers. You also get lyrics and the possibility to control both Spotify's volume and the system volume. And much more... ;)
