Anyone who remembers the original netbooks probably knows my issue: not enough hard drive space. I'm trying to put a newer version of Ubuntu on this netbook for my parents, but apparently Ubuntu is so bloated now that it won't install without 6.3 GB of space. Seriously, guys? Where is all that space even going?

I only have 4.0 GB to work with here, and the current Lubuntu alternate installer has failed me repeatedly with an error about selecting software. I find alternate installers are usually a bit buggier than the graphical ones anyway.

So I tried to folllow this guide:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Installation

But the steps for reducing the minimum allowed hard drive size no longer work. I can't find any "min_disk_size" in the file the guide references anymore. There isn't even a line 310.

Someone please help?

On my wife's eeePC 701, I put in an SD card in the card slot and installed /home on it. I installed the rest of the OS on the built in SSD.

Because of the RAM (512MB) limitation, you will need to use Lubuntu.
