Authentication?

Yes,hello. I just bought a compaq presario v4000 running ubuntu (which I upgraded to version 14.04)

I cannot seem to install any software (such as java) because when I try, it asks for an authentication password. I've never used Linux before, and when I bought the computer, the seller told me nothing about a password.

Do you use a password to login with? Try that one.

If the system is set to not ask for a password and autologin to your username and the seller did not tell you what the password was, you can reset to a new user password by following carefully the info at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

The password you set there will be the one you use to authenticate when installing packages.
