View Full Version : [SOLVED] AMD CPU Compatibility with x64 Ubuntu 14.04.1 ISO File?

Hello, I have a question about the Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS ISO file. There are two versions; x86 and x64. When I downloaded the x64 file to on my x64 custom built box with an AMD CPU I got the ISO just as I had previously downloaded the x86. I used the x86 on a 32 bit laptop and it installed successfully.

However, the x64 version title on file clearly has 'amd64' written after it, which the x86 version does not. Does this mean it is optimised for use on an AMD processor, and if so, will it work on a processor that is not AMD?

'amd64' can be seen here.

Here the x64 is clearly recommended.

Thanks, Dave.

AMD64 doesn't mean it is only for AMD CPUs. This is the architecture description because the AMD64 instruction set became the prevailing instruction set for 64-bit consumer CPUs based on the x86 platform.

This is just an old convention. This version will work on any Intel or AMD processor and is not optimized to perform better one platform over another.

If I remember correctly, AMD first offered 64bit processor, so software makers started labeling software with amd64. But then almost every processor today is 64bit capable.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks, I just wanted to be sure.
