How often are repo mirrors updated?

I can't find an answer to this anyplace.
How often are the repository mirrors updated?
Are they really all the same as the main server?
Do they automatically check the main repo for new files every five minutes? hour? day? week?

I let Software & Updates select what it thought was the best sever for my location and quit getting updates.
I changed back to the main server and got several updates.

- Mirror sites are volunteers. They come and go. You perhaps tried one that left.
- The expectation is each mirror updating 4-6 times each day.
