Hello Ubuntu.

I am installing Ubuntu on a new HP laptop as a wubi install over Windows 7. When I select Ubuntu from the start up menu (I actually have to go thorugh two), the splash screen appears with a message under the Ubuntu logo saying "Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /. Press I to ignore, S to sip mounting, or M ofr manual recovery".

When I press S, I'm thrown to a terminal log-in screen. I enter my user name and password, and I get a command prompt. Where's my GUI? What have I done to my installation?

PS: I don't really care if I have to get rid of Windows, I want Ubuntu to give me my GUI annd generally to install itself correctly.

No, you are not. Did you read the wubi Guide? As you can see on that page, using wubi installs Ubuntu as a program inside a windows operating system.

If you want to install Ubuntu to its own partition, read the guide below which gives detailed instructions.

See http://askubuntu.com/a/454943/14916 for the workaround.

I unpacked the image to a USB, booted from this USB, and killed Windows.

All appears to be good now. Thanks for your help.
