Does anyone know when we are looking to have this OS out in the wild? Linux gamer's dreams coming true soon and I can't wait.

I wonder what would be the hardware requirement though..

Wow... this is slightly old news to be honest. If you want to install it and try it beta images are available (http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/download). As for system requirements here you go (http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown):

What are the SteamOS Hardware Requirements?
Processor:
Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor

Memory:
4GB or more RAM

Hard Drive:
500GB or larger disk

Video Card:
NVIDIA graphics card
AMD graphics card (RADEON 8500 and later)
Intel graphics

Additional:
UEFI boot support
USB port for installation

edit: Decided to download the ISO and pop it into VBox well, because :p

Cheers.. Was browsing through steam installation for ubuntu and came across their website's announcement. However, I can't see much blogs or news convering steamos when compared to counterparts like xboxone and PS4, is it because valve is keeping it low profile or don't want to spend money on advertising a free OS?

It is still beta and there was coverage when it was first unveiled. Once the steam controller is done and the first "legit" Steam Boxes arrive I am sure there will be more buzz again :)

Steambox seems like interesting concept I hope it doesn't have problems of overheating like xbox 360 suffered especially with "red ring of death". I hope they bring BBC iplayer/4od/netflix/Plex and custom app install features to it, would be just perfect..

I'll be installing today to check out the beta and I hope it is what linux users have been waiting for a breakthrough in gaming industry!

Well, you can get the full "Steam OS" experience by installing Steam in Ubuntu and running it full screen (just add a controller of choice).

Hmm.. so what is the point of standalone Steam OS?

It is for use with manufacturers that want to build Steam Boxes. They released it because people like to test things :) - All that Steam OS is at the moment is a stripped down version of Debian Stable (I think it is stable) with some small tweaks to graphics and other hardware drivers and it boots directly into Steam Big Picture Mode.

Great. I hope actual steambox is energy effecient and is reasonably priced for me to buy one else I think I'd stick to ubuntu + Steam build

The idea is for the Steam Boxes to be like PC's. They will have all the typical PC components inside so you will be able to buy one that suites your budget and needs. Lower powered machines will cost less and the top of the range systems will cost lots. As you can expect this will have a big impact on how high you can crank up the visuals.

Yeah the main purpose of SteamOS is to be sold for ~$100 with the Steam controller as a living room "stream reciever" from a Windows PC (streams games from a capable local Windows PC)

The SteamOS is bascically Big Picture mode. It has a desktop component but that will probably be disabled for the final release. They still haven't added stuff like Youtube/Netflix to the SteamOS part of it, which they better do if they want it to be a viable living room PC.

Although Valve is supposivly partnering to sell more expensive Steam Boxes, I can't see people going for it. More casual people will prefer Windows, and enthueists will just build their own rig.

It's a good idea, it may make more peripheral hardware available for Linux distros, which is a good thing. On a side note, I really hope Valve get into gear and start supporting the latest Ubuntu instead of the cobwebbed 12.04.

SteamOS is not based on Ubuntu any longer but on Debian - http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/01/valve-based-steam-os-debian-ubuntu (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/01/valve-based-steam-os-debian-ubuntu)

Not sure how you equate your statement with "legal issues".

Not sure how you equate your statement with "legal issues".

It is not equating to legal issue but providing different perspective on possibilities.
