I have had this problem for a few releases.
Sometimes when I click on the Dash Icon in the launcher, or less frequently when I click on an icon displayed by the Dash and even less frequently when I click on some window furniture, the entire screen goes back to the desktop wallpaper and then the windows of open applications are redrawn.
Whilst this isn't affecting my use of software, it can be irritating to wait for the refresh because very occasionally (this hasn't happened yet in 14.10) all windows will lose their furniture and whilst windows can be dragged around with the mouse, mouse clicks and keyboard input don't work. The only solution is to power off and boot again.
I have no idea where to start looking.
I use 14.10 (64-bit) , but this problem has been around since 13.04.
Graphics card Geoforce 7300 SE / 7200 GS, driver is 304.123
