View Full Version : [ubuntu] 14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

Hello guys,

I've just upgraded to 14.10 almost flawlessly. Everything seems to work fine, execpt when I try to shutdown or restart the system which then becomes completely blocked:
- no more mouse
- no more access to keyboard
- the CPU spikes in the background (I can tell from the noise made by the fan)

BTW, I never had that issue with 14.04.

Any insight?

Either I'm the only one with this bug, which would indicate that it is linked with my hardware (MSI GE6O), or very few people have upgraded to 14.10.

I have given up the possibility to report this bug on launchpad, due to the extreme complexity of reporting Ubuntu kernel bugs.

Below are the contents of /var/log/syslog which are related to the exact moment of the shutdown and the beginning of the reboot process:

The last kernel update 3.16.0-24 has NOT solved this issue.

I had the same problem after updating to 14.10 on my MSI GE40.
But installing the proprietary drivers for nvidia fixed it for me.

Thanks for the tip.
However, the Nvidia driver available on the official repositories is so old...

Been seeing intermittant system freezes on my GeForce GTX 660M/PCIe/SSE2 system but cannot attribute it to any action I was doing on the system at the time of the freeze. Looking at the last syslog activity and searching these bug report hit this bug because of the org.freedesktop.systemd1 references. These are the last two entries in syslog before the reboot entries.

Nov 2 05:49:22 cliffps dbus[877]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.systemd1' (using servicehelper)
Nov 2 05:49:22 cliffps dbus[877]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1'

Running the lastest Nvidia drivers version 331.89 from Nivida-331-updates.

You're suggesting that systemd might be responsible instead, since you're running Nvidia driver rather than Nouveau.
To be honest, I find its presence surprising because I thought it was still in active development and not ready yet for official deployment.

A trace has recently shown up during a failed shutdown; the following is the OCR translation obtained from a picture (available as attachment), meaning some decoding errors may be still there, especially in the "Modules linked in" section that I have not checked:

same issue here ! Any new insights ?

I've discovered that this freezing issue sometimes also happens when the system is inactive.

In most cases, I cannot reboot the same version (3.16) afterwards; the freezing reappears during the reboot process.
So I need to boot with a previous release (3.13) to discover a system message telling me that Xorg has crashed.

I have already reported this bug in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package on launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1388530) a while ago; no answer yet, maybe they are overwhelmed with issues...

Hey,

I have just found a workaround by chance: purging xserver-xorg-video-nouveau from the system removes the freezing issue during shutdown!

That's very strange because the driver is loaded with initrd during the boot, meaning rebooting after the removal does not prevent X Server from using the nouveau driver... without the shutdown issue that was directly caused by the same driver.

Maybe someone can shed light on this mystery.

when I use any type of shutdown command from reboot , shutdown -h now , halt to init 0 -- with different options tried, my server seems to lock . My keyboard and mouse are useless, I just happen to be logged on with ssh and run a few commands and see that none of the drives have unmounted, the server is still running. I call it a server, but its a full desktop , being used now as a server because of the lockups.

I doubt the bug you describe is the same as the one outlined in this thread:

your linux version is before 14.10 (3.13 vs 3.16); I never experienced my issue before 14.10
I don't see any connection in your trace with nouveau driver, whereas nouveau seems clearly invoved in my trace

How about trying to upgrade to last release?

Glad i found this thread; I have been searching for weeks under the false assumption that it was related to a bug in qemu/kvm/vga_passthrough and related drivers.

I'm using 2 ati gfx cards, but not using catalyst driver.
It gets stuck after i see the shutdown text "Unmounting Temporary Filesystems".

If you want your voice to be heard: “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package on launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1388530)
You may also try a trick that worked on my desktop to turnaround this issue before it is solved by uninstalling the last package from your system. It does not completely uninstall nouveau driver since it is baked within initrd which is launched during the boot.

I'm having the same issue with an Acer (integrated Intel graphics) running Xubuntu 14.04. Freezes on shutdown every other time. Any new developments?

No one else jumped in so I'll try to help...

Most issues of hanging on shutdown are traced to a service or hardware not wanting to release it's resources cleanly.

The first thing to try is to add an option to your kernel boot line that will turn off apci... You can test that by temporarily adding it from the Grub boot menu.

On boot, just after the BIOS messages end, start intermittently pressing your left shift key.

Once the menu appears, quickly press the <E> key.

<Arrow-Down> until you get to the line that starts with "linux".

<Arrow-Right> until you get to it's end.

Append that line with "apci=off"

Press <cntrl><X> to boot.

After logging in and getting to the desktop session, shutdown.

If corrected, tell me and we'll trace that down to a specific acpi system.

If not then we'll go to the next diagnostic step.

There is a reported bug. But to see if you are a candidate for joining that, I'm just ruling out other things.

Just going to come out and say it prematurely... If the "acpi=off" switch does not work...

sudo mv /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service ~/org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service

There seems to be a bug with that file, so moving it (keeping the file if needed for some fallback reason), would move it away from causing that problem...

I know I am a year late here but this worked for me. Nothing else I tried had any effect. I was getting the ACPI probe failed error and my msi laptop would freeze when trying to restart. I tried everything in this post as well as then nvidia driver fix. Nothing worked and then I moved that file.

Now my machine boots adn reboots like a beast.

Thanx a million.
