After upgrading Ubuntu 14.04 > 14.10 I get the message "Error while reading from descriptor: broken pipe" each time I boot my pc. This message probably correlates with the issues I face after logging in to Unity. After a few seconds the graphical system shows some confusing behaviour. Next to starting i.e. a file manager (thunar, files, nemo) I can work in the applications window but if I drag this window around there are "snapshots" every one or two mm (like the mouse traces you can activate - except the snapshots remain). When I close the window it stays visible until I change the desktop an return to the previous one which by then will have lost not only the closed window but its wallpaper as well. Desktop icons and icon captions are shown with some blurry halo. Except the very first time whenever I access the unity launcher (which is configured to autohide) it oscillates to and fro several times a second.

Other issues are that I can't start compiz-fusion-icon and that - I don't know the correct term - the window manager or graphics engine or whatever it's called does not work properly so that the surface of dialogs and program windows is displayed somewhat square and angular (a phenomenon I remember to have seen some years ago when firefox used another window-graphics-library-thing as other programs). Using KDE as a graphical desktop solves the traces thing but leaves surfaces angular for example.

There are several bug-reports related to the broken-pipe-message and recommendations to reinstall the OS (see http://askubuntu.com/questions/537970/broken-pipe-error-nessage) which I'd like to avoid...

I'd be thankful if anyone had an idea how to procede.

Best regards

Carsten
