Thanks for the tips, its sorted, i could not do the upgrades from the update manager, I did all the ones I could but the ones left like the firefox and Kernel stuff only loaded from the terminal (which I have never used before for updates) once I ran stuff from terminal everything has worked, thanks for the help and support.

Better to run
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade because this command also upgrades the kernel. Reboot afterwards.

After the reboot
sudo apt-get autoremove deletes old kernels, saving space.
