My vps server has been down now for over a day! They said the server had a kernal panic and they are still working on it! Really a day later!

Pretty sad.

You could drive around, find a curbside PC, put Ubuntu on it and be back in business by 5 pm--with time enough for a beer.

True but when you pay for the Vps you expect it to be running not always down. I think the problem is weloveservers.net is based from the U.K so when a server goes down in the United States they have no pull at getting it back up and running.

Looking at their pricing, it might be a case of "you get what you pay for." Linode (http://www.linode.com/) is somewhat more expensive than weloveservers, but they are extremely reliable. They do occasionally have to take servers offline briefly for maintenance on the underlying hardware, but it's always scheduled and announced in advance, and rarely does the outage last more than an hour. I think this has happened twice in the four years I've been one of their customers.
