Official status awaits in the 15.04 cycle, but I'll try (really hard) to make sure you can dist-upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04.

So it looks like no MATE goodies in the repos for 14.10 without resorting to ppas.

I hope this is true. I changed my Utopic Mate sources to Vivid Mate and did a dist-upgrade the other day and have been getting tons of updates.
The only source extra is not yet converted but as we know that is the last to go.

"sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extras" on Utopic should get you the the full suite. See install help at mate-desktop.org and scattered across the web.

The packages maintained by the new Ubuntu Mate distro are in PPA's, presumably until the project gets its official sanction.

Or you could just get the ISO for Ubuntu Utopic Mate remix 14.10 like I did. It does not contain Unity. It won't be the same if you try to convert Ubuntu Utopic into Mate.
Ubuntu Mate is a whole different OS than regular Ubuntu with Unity.

They haven't put out any ISOs for it yet. But judging from vasa1's post they may some time in the future.

I have gotten tons of mate specific updates so they apparently are developing it.

Great!

Although I have no intention of ever installing MATE I believe a choice of desktop environment is good.

An "official" choice is even better! Hoping Ubuntu MATE becomes an official flavour. :p
