View Full Version : [SOLVED] New 14.04, update failed, now flakey

Did a new dual boot Win7/14.04, all seemed Ok till I did an update which hung with blank screen and no signs of any activity at all. Hit reset after 15 minutes and appeared to boot OK. Have since tried to install a printer driver for a Brother HL2250DN, this hangs and sometimes gives an error sometimes just hangs till I reboot. Also tried installing XSANE scanner which didn't recogise the Epson V500 and crashed fairly quickly, saw a brief error mesage, some thing about post install log missing. Should I download latest instal and start again or can it be rescued?

Can you please open a terminal and run
* sudo aptitude update
* sudo aptitude upgrade

If aptitude isn't there, try
* sudo apt-get install -f
to see if that finishes installing whatever didn't finish correctly.

Lastly, please copy/paste all commands and relevant output back here (use code tags please) if htere are issues.

Thank you for your response. Not sure what this means, don't know how to say I'm root if that is needed.

Okay, try this:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This will ONLY update and upgrade installed packages, not take you to the next release. You have a heap of stuff to update/upgrade (24 items by the looks of your output).

Post back any and all errors messages you may receive.

2 different processes cannot be running using APT concurrently.

The 1st use of aptitude says you don't have it loaded.

The last use of autoremove was as a normal user, so it didn't work - must use sudo.

I'd strongly suggest it is time to gain a little more background knowledge on the system. Skim the first 100 pgs of this PDF: http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php so that little things like sudo aren't confusing anymore.

Anyway, it looks to me like there isn't any issue anymore with your APT db.
* install aptitude
* run an update
* run an upgrade
to be certain. Post any issues back here. thanks for using code tags. It helps.

Thank you, all the commands seemed to work OK. The last command produced this:
vic@AsusFast:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I presume that this means any errors have been corrected?

Yep - looks good.
If you use lvm or encryption, might be good to do some preventative maintenance now. Basically, /boot can fill up and only manually removing old kernels will work. A full /boot partition can be catastrophic - won't boot catastrophic.

Thank you, all the commands seemed to work OK. The last command produced this:

vic@AsusFast:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 0 not to upgrade.
I presume that this means any errors have been corrected?

Oh dear, I thought the long post hadn't worked. Thank you both for your help, I'll mark it as solved.

Hope all is good lift_test. Nice to see you appear to have things up and working as they should be. Good work. We are here to help. ;)

And yes, your output after those commands looks fine. Nothing to update/upgrade now. Run them periodically or use the Software Updater. It uses those commands 'automagically', but I prefer the terminal so I can get a better idea of what might go/be amiss.
