They are making a point about software patents which are being considered by the EU commision etc at present.

Simple. Companies that own nothing but ones and zeros are using all the resources they can to lock up the rights to "their" intellectual property in the world's post-industrial economies.


Because they know China is up and coming, and they know China doesn't give a **** about western patents. Milk the cow to death before it dies....

I hope this doesn't happen, if only because I like playing any old media file in linux....

Why don't you like it? It has been the best player - easiest to get working - for me for a while.

It used to be terrible, but it is maturing well.

Is there any codec that is to movies/video what Ogg Vorbis is to music/audio? IOW, is there an open-source format for video?
