I'll confess jumping to Debian Stable. So, XFCE 4.8 with Cairo-Dock.
14.04 really didn't like my graphics hardware when trying to move from 12.04.

It's been a bit of an adjustment. But, I can work with it just fine.

Image resized to 600 x 480 from 1280 x 1024.

The wallpaper was from an old windows UXtheme I used once. Nice thing with Linux is, I can pull files from windows to Ubuntu on my dual boot system, and with an ssd its almost instantaneously.
Otherwise still Delorean-dark theme with Coloredplastic icons. One thing I noticed is, the taking a screenshot with Screenshot in Ubuntu posts clearer pictures than the one through the forum attachments app.

Thought I would never say this, but I am running Ubuntu 14.10 on my Acer. I haven't had much luck running Unity on this old single core laptop since 12.04. So I had been running various stuff on it over the past couple of years (Elementary OS, Xubuntu, Lubuntu). But I am happy to say Ubuntu 14.10 beta is running well, I think Ubuntu team are doing excellent job as it runs smooth and I am glad to be back on my favorite OS.

Looking good. I admittedly haven't tinkered with Ubuntu with Unity on lower end hardware recently. This makes me wonder if 14.10's implementation of Unity sped things up a bit? I didn't think Unity would be changing much until the Next/Unity 8 series...

Works pretty well most of the time. Lubuntu is more responsive than Xubuntu.

Now if only I can customize the launcher, and get it to suspend when I close the lid! :)

Its just kde installed on Ubuntu, no ties to unity.
The benefit is that I prefer kde (and gnome) over unity as a desktop environment.

I haven't done this in a while, becasue I found it would try to install a lot of duplicate (functionality duplicate, like a Kate and Gedit) applications which would make things a mess. I found an article that goes over making the GTK apps show when in Gnome and Qt apps show when in KDE which would fix this issue, but I haven't bothered to do that.

Well, that happens anyway from time to time, you can easily install core kde packages so you just get the kde core components anyway, thats the good thing about linux.
If you want to mix apps thats no issue either, just use something like qtcurve or oxygen-gtk if you want to the widgets and colors to match.
Remember that linux distro's usually differ more in name then in reality (= under the hood).

Thx! GS rawks, especially on ancient iron. And, it's available in the official Ubu repos ;)

GS always worked fine, but Unity was janky for awhile. Now, they're playing nicely together.

Here's my current take on Ubuntu 14.04:-

257440

Wallpaper; "Haunting foggy river" - sourced via a Google search for 'ethereal, atmospheric landscapes'.
Theme; Albatross. Icons; Win 7 - both via Unity Tweak, courtesy of noobslab.com
Desktop widgets; My-Weather-Indicator (from the repository). Love that digital clock...
Hardware indicators courtesy of 'screenlets'.

'lxterminal' icon; slight mix-up, due to Ubuntu sharing a /home partition with Lubuntu 14.04...

'Fraid I DO like my 'eye-candy'!

That is fantastic!

Well, thank you very much! That's the first re-vamp I've done for about 4 months; I'm rather surprised anybody else likes it, frankly. Many people's tastes seem to run to the dark, moody, vaguely 'sci-fi'/fantasy type stuff.....but it just doesn't do anything for me, I'm afraid.

Very odd, when you consider I'm an avid sci-fi and fantasy reader; I'm a voracious bookworm. But I prefer to use my imagination; I don't really want to see somebody else's interpretation of what I'm picturing in my head... So I stick with landscapes; and go all 'moody' with those instead..!

I go my own way in life; always have done... Contrary to the last! :)

Mike.

I think the best part of 3.14 is how freaking smooth and fast it is... and some of the added transitions and effects are purdy <3!

I'm really starting to like Numix, et. al.

I played around with the Numix Circle iconset, a while back, but (for some reason) didn't like it.

This time, I downloaded the entire contents of their repo and installed everything. :D

Looking great now!

i converted this from a mp4 into a jpg files then into croped gif files wich there then converted into a single gif which was then uploaded to imgur and converted to mp4

Why not just upload the original MP4 to Youtube?
