How does /boot get converted sainly from ext2 to ext4?

The batch for bash came through and it seemed important to get that done. There were about 30 patches including a kernel which would require a grub update. During that grub configuration it hung - after about 20 minutes and watching processes in top appear to be stuck in a loop. Breaking out, cleaning up a few kernels (including a half-installed set of files for -36)from /boot to make more room and starting manually starting the grub process again the process complained that the ext2 file system was a problem. Grub2 does not like ext2.

Cpio the files out to a new location - rebuild the file system as ext4 - cpio the files back in maintaining permissions and run the grub process again - still complains about ext2. Go through all the files in /boot and modify all the references to ext2 to ext4 - run again and the process completes. Reboot fails. Boot from DVD and continue trying to repave the road finally giving up at 4am. This morning the machine was rebuilt from scratch.

I have a laptop - same release - same pending patches with an ext2 /boot.

Got Process?

TIA
