View Full Version : [SOLVED] Saucy does not see Trusty as a new release

~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 13.10
Release: 13.10
Codename: saucy

I've done update, upgrade and dist-upgrade.

~$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
No new release found

it should look for LTS

~$ cat /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades
# Default behavior for the release upgrader.

[DEFAULT]
# Default prompting behavior, valid options:
#
# never - Never check for a new release.
# normal - Check to see if a new release is available. If more than one new
# release is found, the release upgrader will attempt to upgrade to
# the release that immediately succeeds the currently-running
# release.
# lts - Check to see if a new LTS release is available. The upgrader
# will attempt to upgrade to the first LTS release available after
# the currently-running one. Note that this option should not be
# used if the currently-running release is not itself an LTS
# release, since in that case the upgrader won't be able to
# determine if a newer release is available.
Prompt=lts

Why is it not finding Trusty ?

I don't think I've left anything non-saucy active...

I think you need to change the sources from archive to old-release.
Try this
first make a quick backup for fallback reason, in case something goes boing.

sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.bak
then run

sudo sed -i -e 's/ca.archive.ubuntu.com\|security.ubuntu.com/old-releases.ubuntu.com/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
then reload it with

sudo apt-get update
then try the do-release-upgrade command.

It should allow the upgrade then. Don't know how well it'll go, but good luck.

EDIT: oh I should also probably add the normal mantra, make sure you have backups of all your important data, in case things go awry.

Thank you for the suggestion.

However it did not work. Was curious what system should have changed the sources file, if it was the solution...

Did you move the old version back?
(Or simple copy the output from you earlier post and save it as the filename)
reversing course as it were.
Then, maybe, also try changing the release-upgrade from Prompt=lts to Prompt = normal, and then run the apt-get update command again.
See what happens then...

Run
do-release-upgrade without the -d option, which tells the upgrade software to look for a development version (which as of this date would be utopic 14.10).

Can I just change saucy to trusty in the sources list as last resort?
Or would that break something?

I had this on two machines - are you expecting LTS releases? Change the setting to any old recommended release and try again.

Trusty is the next release for Saucy and it happens to be an LTS release.
What I expect is to get the question if I want to upgrade.

Are you saying to revert back to Precise to see if it will upgrade?

What would happen if I manually change the sources.list to Trusty?

OK seems the link got me somewhere.=d>

Since I'm not on LTS, I need to change /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Prompt=normal
Then run

sudo do-release-upgrade
I thought I had already tried that, but this time it seems to recognize Trusty :-D
(aborted, since I tried from an ssh session.)
It's just too late to do it now, but will report bac,k if this is going to be successful. O:)
