View Full Version : [xubuntu] 13.04 upgrade to 14.04 - is it still going?

So I decided to upgrade; it downloaded the preparation files, and warned me that the 1.6GB of files would take 24 mins to download and the upgrade process might take a few hours. Fair enough.

But not long after that, the screen went black, and more than half an hour later, it still is.

Now there's a bit of a complication in that this is in a VMware virtual machine, under Windows 8 (it's a work laptop). I can see the VMware process is taking 90+% of the CPU, so something's definitely happening... (BTW I've previously upgraded from 12 to 13.)

Do I just need to be patient?

Cheers
John

I'd say let it go. It can take some time, particularly on a slower connection. Do you get anything if you hit the spacebar? If not, just let it happen. Hard drive light on? Any signs of life?

Mmm... no, nothing happens if I hit the spacebar. There isn't a hard drive light, but looking at the Windows task manager, the disk activity is showing <10%, frequently 0%. Doesn't seem to be much internet activity either - a few Kbps.

Just the 100% CPU, of which the vast majority is 'VMware Workstation VMX'.

I suppose what I was wondering is whether a black screen is part of the normal upgrade process. That is, isn't the upgrade progress/status monitor normally displayed all the time apart from during the odd reboot? I thought it was for the 12 -> 13 upgrade, but could be wrong.

I'm going to walk the dog; if it's in the same state when I get back, I might just create a new VM.

Possibly a good idea. If 12.04 LTS does not appear to be broken, all good. That is supported until April 2017 and you'll have 14.04 LTS as well. As they're VMs, the more the merrier, I say! Why not have a fiddle with the unreleased 14.10 while you're there and report any issues. ;)

You've confused me a bit there... I'm trying to upgrade from 13.04, and I thought that now the upgrade has at least started, it's not possible to go back to it? And one of the reasons I was trying to upgrade was because I was getting messages that 13.04 is no longer supported by software updates.

The other main reason was that I kept getting reports that things had crashed - didn't seem to prevent me carrying on doing what I was doing, but didn't fill me with confidence either.

Sorry - it's 13.10, not 13.04.

I know because I gave up waiting and did a reset, and although it appeared to boot up ok, I got a message about Ununtu 13.10 experiencing an internal error (which has been happening quite often recently).

Trying to upgrade again. Says it's 'running partial upgrade'...

Right. It's me that's confused. Yes, 13.04 and 13.10 are both no longer supported by Canonical or the forums. I wouldn't bother with the 13.10 VM any longer and I would create a 14.04 LTS VM and use that. Please see here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2229730). Good luck. ;)
