I was searching around to figure out how to make my USB show up on the desktop, and I came across a thread that put me on the right track. The thread is closed so I can't post my findings, but I will do that here for anyone else trying to find it.
Simply right click on a blank part of the desktop --> click Desktop Preferences --> select the Desktop Icons tab --> make sure the third box (Show connected volumes on the desktop) is selected. You should now see any USB thumbdrives, HDDs, or whatever as long as they have been mounted.
