I'm using 14.04 LTS.

I installed mate-desktop. But the option does not show up at login menu.

Ah. I sympathize with Denny. That clears up everything.

The comments in Bug #876675 are a bit discouraging.

Ah, but we do have this

https://ubuntu-mate.org/

much better than a desktop - a Ubuntu Mate flavour (when approval is given) and it is being built on Utopic Unicorn. And it is stable and nice looking.

Regards.

Ubuntu MATE is running on my desktop, and, on my Chrubuntu Acer C7, I installed MATE 1.81, and all is just fine and dandy

Ditto on simply installing Ubuntu MATE'. I have beta2 running and it's been pretty decent. Word is from Wimpy that the release candidate will come out tomorrow so you can always move from beta2 to rc1 with a simple "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" so you'll not lose any data.

I did the upgrade today to rc1 and it's working great as well. The "Official" release should come out with the 15.04 release cycle, can't hardly wait. ;)
