Sorry if this question has been asked before, I am a newb so I am not aware of any previous topics about my question.

I am asking for a reason. It seems the 3D desktop is a big reason some (windows) people like Vista.
Since Linux already has a 3D desktop did Microsoft "borrow" this idea from the Linux community? Was Linux the first OS to have a 3D desktop? Since most of our stuff is open source it seems it would be very easy for microsoft to steal work from the open source community?

Just wondering.

Peace
Rich

I'm not sure. But I can say they wouldn't exactly be stealing per say.

Saying that any one company came up with the idea for a 3D desktop is like saying that it was USA that came up with the idea for the atomic bomb. Scientists from USA, Germany, and Japan all theorisized it would be possible to build at around the same time and were working on it. We just got it to work first.

I don't think Linux desktops have much use for Norton ;-).

But yeah, HL, HL2, and all the other Half-Life games can be made to work with Linux. Wolvenstien Enemy Territory which I have installed runs natively on Linux and it's a free download.

The first 3D desktop I ever seen was in the original Jurassic Park movie. The IDEA of the desktop has been around for years (since computers came out really). I believe Apple was the first to implement an actual hardware accelerated desktop in their OS X.

Desktop wise, this is how I remember the history of it...

Steve Jobs (Apple) heard Xerox had developed a Gui but weren't doing anything with it. He convinced Xerox to give him the source code.

Bill Gates saw a prototype of the Apple gui and convinced Steve Jobs to give him access to it.

Unix and linux got their Gui much later.

this place has some interesting bits and pieces on 3d UIs, although you'd have to wikipedia them to get some kind of timeline:

the first time i remember seeing one was in jurassic park, where that girl says "this is unix, i know this!". its actually IRIX, but thats a type of unix so i guess it'll do. the software is FSN by silicon graphics, which was never really meant to be taken too seriously. there's a port for linux on sourceforge called FSV

FSN: http://www.sgi.com/fun/freeware/3d_navigator.html

i think from a modern GUI perspective, apple were the first to harness OpenGL for thier window environment in a practicle workstation and desktop environment

What does "3D Desktop" really mean?

Thanks for the links aeiah. I'll have fun browsing them.

AFAIK, 3D Desktop (3ddesk) came first before (Sun's) Project Looking Glass, which came first before XGL/Compiz.

You know, that was implemented.
What you saw in Jurassic Park... was a graphical file browser for Unix. It works on Irix (http://www.sgi.com/fun/freeware/3d_navigator.html).

There's also a Linux "port" of that. Check aeiah's link. Here's the direct link: http://fsv.sourceforge.net/

Wow, that's cool Mathiasdm. I always thought that file manager was just like those made-up GUI:s you usually see in movies (the ones that go 'beep' everything you press a button and that have giant screens that say 'access denied'). Too bad there's no Linux version :(
When talking about 3D file managers, I have to mention The Brutal File Manager (http://www.forchheimer.se/bfm/), which was created by some guys at my old school. It's not very complete, but very cool.

EDIT: Just saw the post about the Linux version. Downloading now...

You know, that was implemented.
