I am looking for a GUI file compression/decompression app for Xfce Xubuntu 14.04. Something that handles various compression schemes would be helpful so I do not have to do the line command thing.

Surely file-roller is installed by default in Xubuntu, isn't it? It is in my version, in the accessories menu as Archive manager.

Have you seen that and tried to use it? For certain compression types you may need to install other compression packages, eg p7zip, but so far I have not found any archives that can not be opened or made if all the correct libraries etc etc are available on my machine.

I generally use 7Zip for nonstandard, but it IS kinda a global graphical compression program.

I use xarchiver (don't care for file-roller).
