Fail to upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

I tried but failed to upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 by using "Software Up to Date". It seemed an easy upgrade, but the computer said there might be errors. Thank you in advance for anyone who advises what to do.

If all this looks "kosher", next is to look at the condition of installed packages.

The error message says it:

Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:

Do you have any software from PPAs installed, or have you edited any of the default sources? If so, that's probably the problem. Disable any PPAs or other third-party repos and try again. If it still doesn't work you might need to actually uninstall some packages or replace them with versions from the official repos.
Look in /var/log for release-upgrader log files that will have more details.

I disabled all PPAs or third party repos, but it still gave me the same error message.

My advice:

1. Back-up your files (images / documents / config files etc) to an external (usb) hard drive....
2. Create a dvd or usb (stick) iso of the version of ubuntu you wish to install (e.g. 14.04.1)....
3. Take / keep note of those applications (configurations / ppas / sources) you have appended to the standard ubuntu install (so that you can re-install / re-apply them, later - if you choose to do so)....
3.a. When you are 100% sure you have backed-up everything / taken note of those applications you wish to re-install / configurations you wish to migrate...
4. ...insert the dvd or usb stick - re-start your machine - and do a complete blow-away-the-old re-install of ubuntu.

This is what I do every time I migrate to a latest (x)ubuntu - I never upgrade over top the current....

I also tend to migrate to a latest version "on the 4s" - or on the LTS (Long Term Support) versions (10.04, 12.04, 14.04) - so I only have to perform a full upgrade every ~4 years (though I still back-up regularly / and tend to upgrade more frequently)!

My experience has been clean and easy - and I don't worry about conflicts from earlier application versions - as a fresh install has the latest and (hopefully) greatest iterations of OS and applications - and I also force myself, in the process, to create a sound / simple / easily sustainable back-up / upgrade strategy!

I've edit you last post adding code tags to it. Output posted as plain text loses its formatting and parts of it sometimes turn into smileys making it difficult to read and understand and the use of code tags (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2171721&p=12776168&viewfull=1#post12776168) makes the post clean, compact and more appealing, thus getting more attention from readers.

As to your issue I suspect that the flightgear package might be the culprit. How did you install it? From a PPA?

I would advise you to remove all the external PPAs you've added. From Software-Center > Edit > Software Sources > Other Software, do not only untick them,but delete them.

I managed to solve the problem without removing any packages. On the settings for the update manager, I unchecked all of the Ubuntu Software options, leaving only the first box checked -- "Canonical-supported free and open-source software (main)".

[EDIT] I have FlightGear installed also. The "broken" packages were way too many to even consider removing them all. Hopefully the solution was as simple as I just reported.
