Hello thank you for the reply. Sadly I am unable to understand what to do. I ran those commands on the terminal and nothing happened.

Perhaps you could tell us more about your situation. We can surmise that you have an installation of the now-unsupported 12.10, but it is not clear why you can't or don't want to boot from CD or USB. What hardware are you using? What is the problem with CD or USB?

hello thanks for the reply. The answer to your question would be that I currently dont have a cd with Ubuntu or a flash drive at my disposal I have an external hard drive but I do not know if that would work. I dont know when I will be able to get my hands on a flash drive or cd thats why I am trying to see if there is another way of installing Ubuntu

Where do you live? General location only - never share private info in an open forum!

The reason I ask is because I know some of the LoCo's provide discs, I keep the local library supplied here.

BTW Ubuntu itself is now DVD size. Do you have a DVD drive?

Okinawa. I'm just curious to see if there is a way of just downloading it without a cd or usb. if it isn't possible I will just go tomorrow and purchase a flash drive and do it that way. Didn't hurt asking though :)

Yes there is, I know it works because I tried it once a long time ago:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot/Examples

But as well as I can recall - like I said, it's been a long time - in your case you'd almost need to create a dual boot with your existing 12.10 to pull it off (or maybe you could use the old 12.10 live CD/DVD with the new iso downloaded to your external drive). You'd have to be careful choosing the proper destination for install or you might wipe that external drive!

One of the reasons I don't recall well how it's done is because I found it too difficult and downright fiddly to deal with. I still prefer using DVD's

Thanks for the reply and the link. I am definitely not smart enough to be able to accomplish. Ill just play it safe and try to go and locate a flash drive or a blank cd/dvd tomorrow morning and just re install a newer version of ubuntu.
