View Full Version : [ubuntu] Upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04: No gnome-session-flashback option at lightdm greeter

I've just upgraded my MacPro3,1 from 12.04 to 14.04 via the Update Manager and am having a few issues.

Although I've reinstalled lightdm and gnome-session-flashback packages, I am still unable to login to the gnome windows manager. This is because no gnome (or any other) option is given at the greeter.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Not sure which greeter you might be using with lightdm ................ see if any of these pix are helpful:

Or I could totally be barking up the wrong tree

Nope, that's the correct tree. I'm using the unity-greeter but no gnome foot appears.

Just to be clear. The third image? You do not see that when you click on the Ubuntu icon at the top right of the password panel? By the way, Gnome Session Flashback will not give you the Gnome window manager.

The default option is Ubuntu. When we install Gnome Session Flashback we get two more options, Gnome Flashback (Compiz} and Gnome Flashback (Metacity). We get the option to switch by clicking the Ubuntu icon at the top right of the password panel. And which ever session we choose then becomes the default and its icon replaces the Ubuntu icon and we can switch sessions by clicking that icon.

Both Unity and Gnome Flashback (Compiz) run on the Compiz compositor/window manager. The Gnome Flashback (Metacity) option runs on the Metacity compositor/window manager. What were you expecting to get? What do you mean by "gnome window manager?" Gnome 3 shell?

I see the second image, but if I click on the ubuntu unity symbol in the box with my username and spot for the password, I don't get a menu (I had in the past). I am trying to install the gnome desktop manager ala http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/04/ubuntu-14-04-classic-gnome-flashback-session
