Upgrade 12.04 to 14.04.1 Locks-up on Any Application After Open

Been using 12.04 for 3 years on desktop PC. Yesterday (8/11/14), using Update Manager, updated 12.04 fully AND then selected option on Update Manager to Upgrade to 14.04.1. Result -- Ubuntu desktop now useless. After system boot I select any application (repeat any) and the application will open; however, while trying to move mouse to make a selection in application, the system locks up. Repeated reboot many times and tried different applications. Even tried to go into system settings but in all cases - lock up! I am having to use a Windows PC to post this message! Any suggestions.

I assume you are on ubuntu/unity which has changed a bit from 12o4.

What are your computer specs (cpu, ran, video)?

The PC is Intel PIV 3.0 ghz, 2 gig Mem, 320 gig HD, ATI Rage Fury Pro graphics. The 12.04 was as released with ALL updates.
After ready lots of posts on different forums it appears doing an Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.1 upgrade via Update Manager has not been as successful as hoped.
I have now downloaded 14.04.1 and burned a DVD so will start over on the desktop. I also have 12.04 on one of my laptops so will leave it as is.

See if you can open Additional Drivers.

I don't know how but others know how to change drivers via CLI.
